Dr. Kelly grew up in Monroeville, Pennsylvania and is a graduate of Gateway High School, where he played soccer, basketball, and baseball. He then attended the University of Notre Dame, where he took an interest in medicine and orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Kelly stayed in Indiana for another four years and attended the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he furthered his interests in orthopaedic surgery while serving as the president of the Orthopaedic Surgery Student Interest Group. He was then excited to return to Pittsburgh for his residency in orthopaedic surgery, where he was very active in medical student education and served as chief resident. Dr. Kelly further developed his skills in sports medicine and shoulder surgery with a fellowship at the Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center and Tulane University, where he had the opportunity to train under the mentorship of several internationally renowned surgeons and previous orthopaedic society presidents while learning cutting edge techniques for the treatment of disorders of the shoulder, elbow, and knee.
Throughout his career, Dr. Kelly has been published in several prominent orthopaedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Arthroscopy, and the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine. He also won a resident research award for his study on the biomechanics of the proximal biceps tendon in the shoulder and has presented at regional and national meetings. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Biologic Association, and the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society. Membership in these orthopaedic specialty societies helps to make sure that he stays up to date on the latest surgical techniques and technologies. He is also very active in resident education and is passionate about training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr. Kelly has taken care of several sports teams and athletes at all levels of competition from high school through professional. Prior to joining Greater Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Associates, he served as part of the faculty of the Allegheny Health Network Orthopaedic Institute, where he was on the medical staff for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is in the process of becoming certified as part of the USA Olympic Team medical staff and looks forward to the exciting opportunities ahead helping athletes that represent our country on the international stage. He is proud to be a member of a group of very talented surgeons with a great reputation for providing the most skilled and compassionate care for their patients.
He and his wife enjoy rooting for all of the Pittsburgh sports teams, trying new restaurants, exploring the many museums Pittsburgh has to offer, traveling, and skiing. Dr. Kelly has started getting into golf recently, but he remains very much a beginner whose friends are probably embarrassed to be seen with him. He lives in Pittsburgh’s East End with his beautiful wife, Erica, and their 1 year-old daughter, Brooke.
